Homemade "Febreze"... without the chemicals

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Air freshener sprays are toxic and expensive. Under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, manufacturers are not required to list all ingredients of household cleaners. Ingredients commonly used in fragrances in air fresheners include phthalates, which make fragrances last longer and are linked to male reproductive system birth defects and hormone disruption, and synthetic musks, which are linked to allergies and hormone disruption. Even when you see “pure” or “natural” on the packaging, do not trust in those terms. Those terms are not regulated and are used on so many products that are far from pure and natural.

With 3 simple ingredients, you can make your own and customize the scent any way you like! Homemade Air Freshener Recipe:

Ingredients

2 cups distilled water 10 drops essential oil  Instructions

  1. Measure the baking soda into a bowl and add the essential oil on top.

  2. Using a fork, mix the oil into the baking soda. This will help keep the oil suspended in the water.

  3. Put the baking soda/oil mixture into the spray bottle (a funnel helps) and top off with the distilled water.

  4. Label your bottle, shake before use, and breathe happy–and safely.

5 of My Must-Have Essential Oils:

Lavendar - Relaxing  Frankincense - Freshens & Cleans Air Peppermint - Uplifting, Promotes Focus Rosemary - Stimulating & Rejuvenating Eucalyptus - Breath Easier (love this one when it's cold season) Again, it’s important to understand that these types of products are not only dangerous to our health, but they aren’t actually cleaning the air or eliminating odor. They are just masking it. The bacteria and molecules are still hanging around, maybe even making you sick themselves. Essential oils can actually purify the air and help eliminate odors. Another added bonus to DIYing your own air freshener?... $$$$$!

One bottle of Febreze is $5.  With a $15 (4 oz.) bottle of organic essential oil, a dollar store spray bottle and a $3 bag of baking soda, you can make HUNDREDS of bottles of your own air freshener!!  Savings: One bottle of Febreze every month for a year - $60 Homemade recipe (4 oz bottle of essential oil & other supplies) makes 192 bottles - $20

That equals out to 10 cents a bottle vs 5 dollars a bottle!!!!

Below are a few of my favorites I order. The set gives you a wonderful variety of scents and uses and the 4 oz. bottles are my go-to for my must-haves!
