How to Save Money on Your Heating Bill... 'cause, baby, it's COLD outside!

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Ah, the power bill. An ever-changing dollar amount. It's one of the many reasons spring and fall are my favorite times of year. Summer and winter bring higher bills, but it can be combatted! In my previous blog "Natural Light, it's Benefits & How it Can Save You Money", I talked about how to use natural light to help warm your space and spoke on how to reduce temps in warmer months with energy-blocking curtains. But there's another way to assist in your costs during the winter... an infrared quartz heater (also known as an electric heater)!

My husband and I purchased one a few months ago. It wasn't quite the time of year for it yet but I wanted to get prepared. It has been one of the BEST purchases I have made in a while! Outside of helping to keep your energy costs down, infrared quartz heaters help to maintain the natural humidity within the air, resulting in comfortable heat without drying out the room's air! For me, that was a huge plus. I have suffered with sinus issues since day one and the dry air winter and turning on our heat brings dries my sinuses out to the point to where it is absolute misery. Other benefits of an infrared quartz heater are:

  • It's compact.

  • There's no venting or gas lines needed.

  • It has adjustable heat levels.

  • It has a beautiful realistic flame effect with a glowing log and ember bed that can be operated with or without heat, providing the ambiance of a gentle rolling fire all year long

  • Safe for use around children and pets.

  • Has a built-in overheat protection so the heater will instantly shut off to prevent overheating.

  • It's portable and can be moved easily.

  • Super easy to assemble!

The unit we purchased heats up to 1,000 square foot. Each unit will have the space it will heat listed on the box. Our home is just a touch under 1,500 square foot. We placed our heater in the living room (where the thermostat is located). During the day, I'll close the bedroom doors (we have a single-level home) and turn it on. We keep our thermostat at 67 in the winter. At those temps before purchasing the heater, we could hear the unit cycle on frequently and every time it does, I'd hear cha-CHING... money spent. Since having the heater and using it the way we do, our home heating unit hardly cycles on during the day and even with having the temp set just a little over halfway on the electric heater, our main living area gets up to a comfortable 72 degrees! The last few months of cooler weather and using our infrared heater, I have seen a DRASTIC change in what our power bill generally is during cooler months.

When purchasing an infrared quartz heater, keep in mind your square footage and location of your thermostat(s). For a single-level home with one thermostat, you can operate it as we do or if you didn't want closed doors, you could put two throughout your space. For a two-story home, especially if you have multiple thermostats, you should purchase one for each floor. Below (left) is the Duraflame 19.5-in W 5200-BTU Black Metal Infrared Quartz Electric Stove with Thermostat we purchased. I have included several other top-rated infrared quartz heaters to show the customization and styles available! With the drop we have seen in our power bill, it is definitely worth the investment in my book.
